TotalEnergies addresses renewable energy commitment

Green Forum
Addressing climate change is a fundamental aspect of our long-term growth strategy and our commitment to achieving net-zero emissions across all our operations by 2050, in collaboration with society. To ensure success and meet the rising electricity demand, we are enhancing our proficiency in renewable energies, particularly solar power due to its numerous benefits. Solar energy, inherently clean and abundant, is also flexible, efficient, and cost-competitive.

TotalEnergies is expanding its presence throughout the renewable energy value chain with an integrated approach. We conceive, finance, construct, and operate photovoltaic solar plants. Over four years, our renewable power generation capacity has increased over tenfold, from 0.7 GW in 2017 to 10 GW in 2021. This growth was driven by a surge in renewable energy projects in 2020, including the operation of over 2,000 megawatts of solar assets in India, the development of more than 5,000 megawatts of solar projects in Spain, and the establishment of an 800-megawatt solar farm in Qatar.

In 2020, TotalEnergies partnered with Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), the renewable energy arm of the Adani Group, to form a joint venture with 2.3 gigawatts of operational solar projects across 12 Indian states. Through this collaboration, TotalEnergies is contributing to India's energy transition. Additionally, in January 2021, the company announced the acquisition of a 20% stake in AGEL.

One of the many advantages of solar power is its ability to decentralize power generation, bringing it closer to consumers. We support this shift by developing distributed photovoltaic solutions, including rooftop systems for residential, industrial, and commercial buildings, as well as solar carports. Our SunPower subsidiary, for instance, is a leading provider of distributed generation solutions in the United States across commercial and residential sectors. We also implement these systems at our facilities. With nearly 2,700 of our service stations equipped with solar panels as of the end of 2021 (with a target of 5,000), this initiative has allowed us to cultivate expertise that can benefit customers seeking a multi-site approach across one or more countries.

The Zeeland refinery, situated in the Netherlands near Middelburg and 55 %-owned by TotalEnergies, has implemented a solar plant comprising 28,000 photovoltaic panels on an 11.5-hectare site. This 12-megawatt solar installation directly powers the refinery, contributing to its carbon footprint reduction and lowering its energy expenses.
