EDP inaugurates Albina solar plant in Romania

Green Forum
EDP, through EDP Renewables, a global leader in the development of renewable energy, has inaugurated the Albina photovoltaic power plant – an important step for the company.

This investment contributes to EDP's efforts to support the development of a cleaner, more secure and affordable energy system in the country.

Located in western Romania, about 9 kilometres from the municipality of Timișoara, the Albina project is operational from the end of 2024. The Albina has an installed capacity of 60 MWp (48.8 MWac) and is expected to generate around 67 GWh of solar power annually – enough to meet the electricity needs of almost 40,000 Romanian households. Its production will also help to reduce CO₂ emissions by more than 33,000 tonnes each year, playing a direct role in decarbonising the national energy mix.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by institutional representatives, including Sebastian-Ioan Burduja, Minister of Energy, Alin Popoviciu, Vice President of Timis County Council, Andrei Rapeanu, Country Manager EDP Romania, as well as other representatives of the company and the energy sector.

“I congratulate the EDP team for the project inaugurated in Timis. It is a beautiful story about investors' confidence in a Romanian market capable of offering stability and growth prospects. It is about how private capital can change things for the better when it has room to grow. The energy that will be produced by this photovoltaic park is green, but above all it is locally produced and affordable. Every MWh generated here means less dependence on imports, a lower price on the market and the prospect of attracting even more energy investors,” said Sebastian-Ioan Burduja, Minister of Energy.

“Albina marks a new chapter for EDP in Romania. It clearly reflects the company's long-term industrial commitment to accelerate the transition to a cleaner energy system. We will continue to invest in the country, convinced that renewable energy is a key factor for economic development and energy security throughout the region,” emphasised Andrei Rapeanu, Country Manager of EDP in Romania.

With this new power plant, EDP reinforces its commitment to Romania, where it already operates several wind and solar projects with a total installed capacity of more than 570 MW. The company is one of the leading renewable energy producers on the Romanian market.

This investment is in line with Romania's updated climate targets under the European Union's Fit for 55 package. The country has committed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 57% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels and to achieve a 45% share of renewable energy in gross final energy consumption. Projects such as Albina will play a key role in helping Romania reach these targets in a steady and sustainable way.
