Orange and ENGIE secure 10-year renewable energy pact

Green Forum
Orange Romania has signed a new 10-year virtual Power Purchase Agreement (vPPA) with ENGIE Romania to secure 40 GWh of renewable energy annually.

The green energy will come from one of ENGIE's wind farms, furthering a collaboration that began in 2023 with a 30 GWh vPPA.

ENGIE Romania operates 211 MW of renewable energy capacity, including three wind farms (178 MW) and five solar farms (33 MW). In 2024, the company expanded its portfolio with its first hybrid wind-solar plant and is commissioning a 37.2 MWp solar project in Prahova County, aiming for 1 GW of capacity by 2030.

This agreement supports Orange Romania's goal of reaching #NetCarbonZero by 2040. By 2024, 93% of its energy consumption came from renewables.

“This long-term partnership will significantly contribute to our decarbonization goals, ensuring that a substantial part of our energy needs come from renewable sources. Orange Romania actively supports the transition to green energy in the region, as part of its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. By investing in green energy solutions, Orange Romania not only supports the adoption of green energy for its own operations, but also contributes to strengthening the regional energy ecosystem,” said Julien Ducarroz, CEO of Orange Romania.

“We are pleased to support Orange Romania on its path towards achieving carbon neutrality, by providing electricity produced by our renewable energy assets and by ensuring the predictability of energy costs. We want more and more companies to adopt this type of medium and long-term purchase contracts, especially in the current context of volatility, in which securing medium and long-term energy needs can help mitigate risks related to energy prices, while contributing, at the same time, to achieving sustainability objectives,” said Nicolas Richard, CEO of ENGIE Romania.
