ENGIE acquires 54 MW wind project in Constanța

ENGIE Romania has completed the acquisition of a 54 MW wind power project located in Mereni, Constanța County, marking a new milestone in the company's strategy to expand its renewable energy portfolio and reach 1 GW of installed capacity by 2030.

Acquired in a “ready to build” stage, the project has already secured all necessary construction permits. Construction is set to begin later this year, with commissioning planned for 2027.

The Mereni wind farm is expected to generate 180 GWh of clean energy annually—enough to power around 90,000 homes or sustain approximately 20 medium-sized data centers operating at 1 MW each. Environmentally, the project will help avoid about 55,000 tons of CO₂ emissions per year, an impact comparable to planting more than 900,000 trees.

“This acquisition reflects our continued commitment to advancing the energy transition by building a diverse and sustainable portfolio of renewable energy projects. We remain focused on delivering long-term value and reliability to our clients through clean, competitive solutions,” said Cristian Buzan, Deputy CEO of ENGIE Romania.

Following its 2024 expansion with a 57 MW hybrid wind-solar plant and the acquisition of an 80 MW operational wind farm, ENGIE Romania now operates 211 MW in renewable energy capacity. This includes three wind farms totaling 178 MW and five solar parks with a combined capacity of 33 MW. The company also plans to soon commission a 37.2 MWp solar project in Ariceștii Rahtivani, Prahova County.
