Holcim launches 28.45 MW solar park in Hungary

Holcim has inaugurated a new solar park adjacent to its cement plant in Királyegyháza, Hungary, marking a significant advancement in the company's sustainability initiatives.

Developed in collaboration with ID Energy Group, the solar facility boasts a capacity of 28.45 MWp and is projected to generate approximately 38,000 MWh of clean energy annually. This output is sufficient to meet the average energy needs of about 13,800 households. 

Situated in the Baranya region, known for its 2,170 sunshine hours per year, the solar park enables Holcim Hungary to source nearly a third of its energy requirements from renewable sources. This transition is expected to reduce the plant's Scope 2 CO₂ emissions by approximately 6,000 tons annually.

The project is underpinned by Hungary's largest private renewable power purchase agreement (PPA) to date. Under this agreement, ID Energy Group will supply Holcim with renewable electricity at a fixed rate for 15 years. Additionally, any surplus energy not consumed by the cement plant will be fed into the public grid, enhancing the project's contribution to the broader energy ecosystem. 

Tamás Hoffmann, CEO of Holcim Hungary, emphasized the importance of this development, stating, "For Holcim Hungary, it's incredibly important to continuously decarbonize our production technologies through the use of alternative fuels and renewable energy sources. This recently commissioned solar farm is another important milestone on the way to achieving net zero."
