Hungary leads Europe in solar energy with 25% share

Green Forum
Hungary has risen to the top of Europe's solar energy leaderboard, surpassing Greece, with solar power now contributing an impressive 25% of the country's domestic electricity generation in 2024, according to a report released by the think tank Ember, the Ministry of Energy Affairs said.

The latest data, published by the independent think tank Ember, shows Hungary leading Greece's 22% and Spain's 21% in the share of solar energy in electricity generation. This marks a remarkable jump for Hungary, which only generated 4% of its electricity from solar in 2019, making it the fastest-growing country in this area over the past five years.

In another milestone, Hungary, alongside the Netherlands, has achieved a significant feat: during peak production periods, domestic solar plants were able to meet more than 80% of the country's electricity needs on over 70 days in 2024, a huge leap from just 10 such days in 2023.

By early 2025, Hungary's solar energy capacity has exceeded 7,550 megawatts, a 25% increase over previous projections for 2030. Remarkably, 80% of this capacity was installed since 2020, with annual growth of at least 1,200 megawatts each year since 2022.
