Ocean Winds taps Polish firm for BC-Wind

Green Forum
Ocean Winds, a joint venture equally owned by EDP Renováveis and Engie, has selected Polish firm Crist Offshore to deliver the offshore substation for its 500 MW BC-Wind project. The scope of the contract includes the full design, construction, and commissioning of the substation.

This collaboration marks a milestone in Poland's offshore wind sector, as Ocean Winds becomes the first developer in the country to appoint a local Tier 1 supplier for a critical component of an offshore wind farm. The company emphasized that the agreement showcases the ability of Polish industry to contribute to advanced renewable energy infrastructure.

The substation, which is now under design, will be built at Crist's shipyard in Gdynia. Once fitted with all essential electrical systems, it will weigh approximately 2,000 tonnes. Installation offshore is expected in mid-2027. The project is also set to generate employment for over 400 specialists, according to Ocean Winds.

Located around 23 kilometres off Poland's Baltic coast, the BC-Wind project has secured all major permits, including a grid connection (granted in 2020), environmental clearance, and a contract for difference awarded in 2021. Detailed site and cable route surveys were finalised in 2024.

Crist Offshore, part of the Crist Group established in 1990, has evolved from traditional shipbuilding into offshore energy manufacturing, positioning itself as a key player in Poland's growing renewable energy supply chain.
