Lidl Romania exceeds 2030 sustainability targets early

Green Forum
Lidl Romania has published its eighth sustainability report for the 2024 financial year, announcing accelerated progress in reducing environmental impact. The retailer has achieved its international 2030 target for transitioning to natural refrigerants, with these now used in 100% of logistics centres and 81.7% of stores, compared to the original goal of 100% of logistics centres and 40% of stores. The company has also increased its green energy usage to 80% of total consumption.

The company continues expanding investments in sustainable infrastructure, equipping 108 stores and two logistics centres with photovoltaic panels and constructing new stores exclusively certified to EDGE standards. Additionally, the retailer has strengthened partnerships with over 540 local producers, reaching 4,366 items from Romanian suppliers in its entire range.

"Exceeding the natural refrigerants transition target ahead of schedule is one of our most important achievements, as it has a direct and measurable effect on emissions reduction," said Maria Mihai, Head of Corporate Affairs at Lidl Romania. "Real progress comes when you integrate sustainability into every operational decision, whether we're talking about green energy, photovoltaic infrastructure or sustainable collaborations with local suppliers."

In 2024, 80% of electricity used by Lidl Romania came from green sources, while photovoltaic panels installed across the network generated 4.9 million kWh of electricity internally. The company's network now includes 381 charging points for electric cars available to customers in store car parks.

Regarding waste management, 72% of waste was recycled, totalling 122,916 tonnes. The company redistributed 239 tonnes of food products to nine regional food banks, redirected 19,152 tonnes of non-animal products to biogas stations, and redistributed 367 tonnes of animal feed to shelters. Approximately 50% of merchandise value comes from Romanian suppliers, with Lidl Romania collaborating with 541 local suppliers and purchasing 144,748 tonnes of Romanian fruits and vegetables.
