Described by the Ministry of Energy as the largest operational battery storage facility in the European Union by total energy capacity, the installation underscores Bulgaria's growing role in stabilizing the regional power grid.
Developed by Advance Green Energy AD, a Sofia-based company founded in 2024 by brothers Kiril and Georgi Domuschiev, the BESS represents a significant private investment of 147 million levs (approximately $85 million or €75.2 million). The system is composed of 111 battery containers and is located in the Balkan Industrial Park in Lovech.
According to the Lovech municipal government, the facility includes not only the battery containers but also transformer stations, inverters, and a centralized control and security system. The project was completed in just six months, a pace made possible thanks to streamlined permitting from local authorities.
Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov hailed the installation as a milestone for Bulgaria's energy independence and regional leadership. “This facility will help maintain the most stable energy system in Southeast Europe,” he said. “We are the pillar of the Balkans in balancing electricity systems.”
The new system also signals the beginning of Bulgaria's national plan to reach 10 GWh of battery storage capacity within the next year. A recent capacity tender has already allocated nearly 9,713 MWh to upcoming projects, further reinforcing the country's ambitions in energy storage.
Before the commissioning of the Lovech facility, Bulgaria's largest BESS was a 25 MW / 55 MWh system developed by Renalfa IPP in 2024. The new project therefore marks a significant scale-up in both power and energy capacity.
Advance Green Energy is currently focused on the construction and operation of renewable energy storage infrastructure, and the successful delivery of this landmark project is expected to pave the way for further developments in the sector.
