Hidroelectrica launches first battery storage project

Green Forum
Hidroelectrica has signed a contract for the purchase of its first Li-ion battery energy storage system, which will be deployed at the Crucea Nord Wind Farm.

The battery will be manufactured and supplied by the Romanian company Prime Batteries Technology SRL, with installation carried out by another Romanian firm, Enevo Group SRL. The total value of the contract is close to 16 million euros, excluding VAT.

This project aims to reduce internal power fluctuations at the Crucea Nord Wind Farm, part of Hidroelectrica's portfolio, and will allow the company to provide balancing services to the national energy grid. It will also improve turbine performance and reduce wear on their electromechanical components.

According to the preliminary timeline, all permits and approvals are expected within two months of signing, followed by six months allocated for the production of equipment and materials. Afterward, the project will proceed with site handover, construction setup, installation, system integration, and technical testing.

The battery system is scheduled to become operational within 12 months. Once in place, it will have a nominal output of 36 MW and a storage capacity of 72 MWh.

This marks Hidroelectrica's first venture into battery-based energy storage, a significant milestone for the company.
Hidroelectrica SA owns and operates the Crucea Nord Wind Farm, which has been generating power since 2014 with an installed capacity of 108 MW.
