Hidroelectrica progresses Portile de Fier I overhaul

Green Forum
Hidroelectrica announces the completion of a key phase in the maintenance works for hydro unit no. 1 at the Portile de Fier I Hydroelectric Power Plant.

The project, initiated in July 2023, involved the full dismantling of the hydro unit, the transportation of its components to the UCMH factory in Reșița for assessment and repairs, followed by the reassembly and testing of the rotor-turbine assembly at the factory.

The works contract was awarded to SSH Hidroserv, which subcontracted the execution to the UCMH factory in Reșița. Here, the turbine rotor—measuring 9,500 mm in nominal diameter—underwent extensive specialized machining, made possible by the use of large-scale machine tools, unique in Romania.

The factory-based activities, including testing the fully equipped rotor, took place between December 2023 and September 2024, while reassembly at Portile de Fier I began in October 2024. By February 14, 2025, the works had been completed, with fluid tests and auxiliary system integrations already underway, marking the transition to the final commissioning stage.

Over the next month, comprehensive testing will be carried out, with completion expected by March 14, 2025. These evaluations aim to confirm the unit's operation at optimal parameters and ensure the reliability of the entire system, according to the company.
