Orlen secures €1.8 billion for grid upgrade

Green Forum
Polish energy group Orlen announced that its subsidiary, Energa Operator, has secured a €1.8bn loan to modernize the power grid, preparing it for the integration of renewable energy sources.

The project, part of the National Recovery Plan (KPO), includes upgrading and building 21,000 km of power lines in northern and central Poland, with a total investment of €9.576 billion planned through 2035. A central goal is integrating up to 9 GW of renewable energy and expanding energy storage capacity to 1.4 GW under Orlen's strategy.

The upgrades will improve grid reliability for 3.5 million customers and connect 200,000 new prosumers. Northern Poland, key to the country's energy transition, hosts Orlen's onshore renewable facilities and will soon include four offshore wind farms and energy storage systems.

The network will be supported by two combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plants under construction and two more planned in Gdańsk and Grudziądz. Energa Operator's grid, currently linked to 9.6 GW of Poland's renewable capacity, is set to expand to nearly 19 GW, with prosumer connections projected to reach 500,000.
