Renewables were 24.5% of EU energy in 2023

Green Forum
In 2023, renewable energy accounted for 24.5% of the EU's gross final energy consumption, marking a 1.4 percentage point increase compared to 2022.

However, this figure remains 18 percentage points below the 2030 target of 42.5%, which would require an average annual growth of 2.6 percentage points between 2024 and 2030.

Among EU countries, Sweden led the way, with 66.4% of its gross final energy consumption derived from renewables, primarily solid biofuels, hydro, and wind. Finland followed at 50.8%, also relying heavily on solid biofuels, wind, and hydro, while Denmark ranked third with 44.9%, driven mainly by solid biofuels and wind energy.

At the other end of the spectrum, the lowest shares of renewable energy were observed in Luxembourg (11.6%), Belgium (14.7%), and Malta (15.1%).
