PPC starts second phase of 490 MW solar park in Greece

Greece's Public Power Corporation (PPC) has begun the second phase of construction on its flagship 490 MW solar power plant in Megalopoli, part of a broader strategy to repurpose former lignite mining sites into renewable energy hubs.

This new stage follows the signing of an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract between PPC Renewables and TERNA. It involves building an additional 125 MW of capacity across roughly 494 acres within the former Megalopoli mining area.

The first phase of the project, also 125 MW, is already under construction and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The third and final phase—planned for 2026—will add another 240 MW, bringing the total installed capacity to 490 MW.

In this phase, approximately 215,000 bifacial solar panels mounted on fixed structures will be installed and connected to the existing extra-high voltage Megalopoli substation via a new high-voltage station at the nearby Neo Choremi site.

Once fully operational, the plant is expected to generate 860 GWh of electricity annually—enough to power 215,000 homes—and cut carbon emissions by around 430,000 tons per year.
