Poland backs world's largest offshore tower plant

Green Forum
Poland's government has pledged €54 million in state aid to support the construction of what is set to become the world's largest factory for offshore wind turbine towers.

The facility will be developed by Windar Polska, the local subsidiary of Spanish renewable energy firm Windar Renovables, and will be located on the northern Baltic Sea coast, where Poland plans to launch its first offshore wind farms in the near future.

The Baltic Sea will soon become a model for generating clean, efficient, and affordable green energy for both Poland and Europe,” said Development Minister Krzysztof Paszyk at the signing ceremony for the financing agreement with Windar Polska.

The factory will occupy a 17-hectare site on Ostrów Grabowski island in Szczecin harbour. The location was chosen to facilitate direct sea transport of the massive steel towers, which can reach up to 10 meters in diameter, 50 meters in height, and weigh as much as 450 tonnes.

Once operational, the plant is expected to produce up to 500 tower sections per year — approximately 100 complete towers, depending on the model — each designed for turbines with a 14-megawatt capacity. The total investment is projected at 880 million zloty, with Windar Renovables contributing 653 million zloty and the remainder covered by state funding.
