Energy sector greenhouse gas emissions decline in Hungary

Greenhouse gas emissions in Hungary's energy sector are on a downward trend as the share of electricity generated by fossil fuels drops and that of renewables and nuclear power grows. Data compiled by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) show that CO2 equivalent emissions of the energy sector, including electricity, gas, district heating, and air conditioning, reached 14.1 million tonnes in 2021, down 28% from 10 years earlier, according to the Budapest Business Journal

During the same period, greenhouse gas emissions of the manufacturing sector increased 23% to 13.1 million tonnes.

Emissions from the logistics sector dropped 26% to 5.7 million tonnes and emissions from the farm sector climbed 24% to 9.8 million tonnes.

Total emissions of CO2 equivalent of the national economy decreased 6% to 55.6 million tonnes.

Including the 23.9 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions of households, the total CO2 equivalent emissions of the country reached 79.5 tonnes in 2021, down 5% from 10 years earlier.
