Canada backs Poland's nuclear energy transition

Green Forum
Canada has taken a significant step in supporting Poland's energy transition, with Export Development Canada (EDC) issuing a letter of intent to provide up €1.37 billion in financing for Poland's first nuclear power plant.

The project, led by Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ), will be developed at the Lubiatowo-Kopalino site in Pomerania. This move positions Canada as a key international partner in Poland's nuclear energy ambitions, alongside major U.S. financial institutions.

Piotr Piela, Vice President of PEJ, expressed enthusiasm about the international interest in the project, stating:

“We are pleased to observe great interest in our investment from leading entities of the global financial market, with whom we are in constant contact. The EDC's letter of intent is another confirmation of this and at the same time our next step towards the implementation of the strategy of obtaining financing for the entire project.”

The strategy also involves engaging with institutions from nations with established nuclear supply chains to diversify and streamline financing options. This international support strengthens PEJ's ability to fund this critical energy project, while the Polish government's pledge of PLN 60 billion underscores robust domestic backing.

With contributions from Canada and other global players, Poland's nuclear vision is gaining momentum, marking a pivotal moment in its energy transition.
