Study shows that global wind power production is very predictable

Green Forum
When the global onshore wind power portfolio across the world was considered, the annual wind energy index varied within a 3% range over the past 15 calendar years, according to a study conducted by Eoltech, a consultancy specializing in wind and solar resource assessment. This observation illustrates that the wind resource is very stable from one year to another at a global scale whereas, within a given area, the annual production can vary within a 25 % range.

The data reveal that wind power generation worldwide demonstrates remarkable predictability, with annual variations consistently staying within a range of 3%. These findings are based on the irec index, a wind energy index encompassing 80% of the world's onshore wind farms installed as of 2023.

The study integrates the irec wind energy indexes, which Eoltech releases monthly for the 300 geographical areas worldwide with the highest concentration of wind farms. Through the aggregation and weighting of this data, Eoltech has constructed both a "Global" and a "European" wind energy index, offering insights into global wind resource trends over the past 15 years.

The Global Index encompasses geographical areas hosting approximately 80% of the world's operational onshore wind farms as of 2023, while the European Index covers 97% of the continent's operational wind farms. The European Index indicates that annual wind resource variations in Europe fall within a 7% range, compared to 3% globally.

irec index is a wind energy index that quantifies the production expected in a given period compared to the long-term average within each region. This monthly indicator offers asset managers and wind farm owners essential insights in an easy-to-use format to check the actual production capacity of their portfolio, month after month or over elapsed periods. irec indexes are used for the monitoring of hundreds of wind farms worldwide, to get a portfolio overview and to complement the in-depth analysis of SCADA data by the operator.

Established in 2002, Eoltech is an independent consultancy offering a wide range of services related to wind and solar resource assessment throughout the project lifecycle. With over 20 years of expertise, Eoltech has emerged as a leading consultancy in France's renewable energy market. Additionally, for more than a decade, Eoltech has specialized in designing the irec index, a wind energy index dedicated to monitoring wind asset portfolio production.
