Electrica uses AI to identify headquarters' energy footprint

Green Forum
State-owned company Electrica is implementing an artificial intelligence algorithm system that will be able to identify the energy footprint of the main receivers in the head office in real time, as part of an indirect monitoring process.

The initiative comes as a result of the ongoing concern to identify effective solutions to support sustainability efforts. Electrica aims to create a strategy to replicate the solution across its entire building estate.

It consists of the development of artificial intelligence-based algorithms that will coordinate a set of advanced numerical methods, with the aim of real-time detection of main energy consumers in the company's headquarters.

Developed together with researchers from the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca and startup Renergia, the AI-AE system uses measurement sensors throughout the building and an intelligent monitoring system.

Energy consumption information will be processed using algorithms that will take into account the consumption patterns recorded. The project also involves the creation of a cloud infrastructure for collecting and storing consumption data.

„The project will also generate a dashboard tool for easy access to the information obtained from the application of the developed methodology, in the form of a web platform. It will give our partners at Electrica the possibility to visualise in real time the energy consumption segregated according to the categories of receivers, but also to automatically generate recommendations for energy efficiency", said Professor Vasile Țopa, rector of the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca.

Renergia is a technology startup affiliated with the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca. Using probabilistic, statistical and artificial intelligence techniques combined with energy expertise, Renergia generates a personalized energy balance for homes. This innovative tool estimates electricity and heat consumption while generating energy efficiency measures for users.

Smarter operations for older buildings: Unlocking fast energy savings with AI control

Older buildings usually consume more energy in operation than new construction. That is not only a cost issue. It also affects how an asset performs against market standards like BREEAM, EU Taxonomy, and CRREM, as well as regulations such as the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive and the rules for Building Automation and Control Systems (BACS). Many owners assume the only way to close the gap is a major refurbishment. Better insulation and new equipment certainly help, but they are expensive and disruptive. Investments in deep fabric and equipment upgrades can reach one to five percent of the asset value.

Nearly 772 million liters of water are lost annually due to leakages

The Annual Water Report, based on over 13.5 billion liters of monitored water usage across 5,370 properties in 36 countries, reveals that 67% of properties experience water leakage yearly. With rising water scarcity, increasing tariffs, aging infrastructure, and stricter regulations, property owners are under growing pressure to better understand their water consumption.
