Amazon and Iberdrola expand 476MW renewable deal

Green Forum
Amazon and Iberdrola have expanded their global renewable energy partnership by adding 476MW of new power purchase agreements (PPAs) across five countries.

A key addition to this partnership is Amazon's first PPA in Portugal, securing 219MW from the Tâmega Wind Complex, set to begin construction in early 2025. Iberdrola highlights this as Portugal's largest green hybridisation project, designed to maximise the use of the existing grid connection at the Tâmega hydroelectric complex.

In Spain, the partnership has been reinforced with two large-scale PPAs, adding a combined 257MW of solar and wind energy. Amazon will acquire 212MW from the Ciudad Rodrigo solar PV plant in Salamanca, expected to generate enough clean energy to power 150,000 homes annually. Additionally, Amazon will purchase the output from 45MW of capacity at the Valdemoro wind farm in Burgos. This site, with an installed capacity of 49.5MW, features eleven wind turbines with a height of 107.5 metres and a rotor diameter of 145 metres, capable of supplying electricity to approximately 48,000 households.

Amazon and Iberdrola first established their strategic collaboration in 2022, focusing on renewable energy PPAs and cloud services. This new agreement strengthens their cooperation in both existing and new markets. Over the lifetime of all signed agreements, Amazon has contracted more than 66,000GWh of renewable energy from Iberdrola worldwide.
