CEZ Romania builds floating PV energy system in Caraș-Severin County

Alina Oprea
The company TMK Hydroenergy Power, part of the CEZ Group in Romania, is building the first floating photovoltaic energy system in Romania in Caraș-Severin County, on the stilling lake of the Grebla hydroelectric plant. The project aims to dispose of the currently unused water body of the Grebla stilling lake, with an area of approximately 30,000 sqm. The energy produced will partially cover TMK Hydroenergy Power's internal electricity consumption. Also, the production of energy with the help of the sun will lead to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions that will total over 332,622 t CO2 per year.

"TMK Hydroenergy Power, in partnership with Innovation Norway, is building the first floating photovoltaic energy system on the Grebla lake, which will generate more than 1 million kW/year. This project means a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of over 300 t CO2 annually. The project of the photovoltaic plant on Lake Grebla brings the energy of the future closer, by developing the first floating photovoltaic energy system of 1,000 kW. Thus, we value the synergy between the sun, water, and the electrical infrastructure of TMK Hydroenergy Power, part of the CEZ Group in Romania", announces the company.

The value of the investment is €1.36 million, TMK Hydroenergy Power benefiting from an Innovation Norway grant to cover part of the expenses.

From the total amount, €131,950 represents the non-eligible value and the total eligible value is €1.23 million, of which €737,500 represents the non-refundable eligible value.

The photovoltaic panels were delivered together with the floats and related equipment. The preliminary stages for the start of the installation of the photovoltaic panels were carried out.

In the following weeks, the following will be carried out: the assembly of the floats (floating systems); installation of photovoltaic panels; carrying out the connection works; and integration of the floating photovoltaic plant into the existing system.

On March 31, 2021, the TMK Hydroenergy Power company along with the other CEZ Group companies in Romania were acquired by the funds managed by Macquarie Asset Management (MAM), part of the Macquarie Group in Australia.

In December 2010, the CEZ Group in Romania acquired 100% of the shares of the company that owned the hydropower system near Reșita, consisting of 4 micro hydropower plants (Grebla, Crainicel 1, Crainicel 2 and Breazova) and the related hydro facilities from Timiș Trei Ape, Gozna, Valiug and Secu, having a total installed capacity of approximately 22 MW after the re-engineering process and a production of approximately 70 GWh/year.
