DN AGRAR invests €3.4 million in renewable energy

DN AGRAR Group, Romania's largest dairy producer, founded by Dutch entrepreneurs, is set to invest €3.4 million in a new compost plant and the installation of solar panels on the rooftops of buildings at three of its farms.

As the country's largest integrated livestock farm, DN AGRAR Group plans to launch this investment in 2025, which includes the development of a compost facility at Lacto Agrar farm—its second within the Group—and the installation of solar panels at the Apold, Lacto Agrar, and Cut (DN AGRAR Service) farms. The project's financing is subject to shareholder approval during the Extraordinary General Meeting scheduled for March 25, 2025, as announced by the company.

“Our commitment to sustainability drives us to invest in renewable energy and circular agriculture solutions. These projects will be funded through a combination of European grants and bank loans, further solidifying our leadership in the industry. Following the successful launch of our first composting unit at the Apold farm, which has generated significant market interest, we are excited to expand our operations by establishing a second composting unit at the Lacto Agrar farm. This new facility is expected to be fully operational in the fourth quarter of 2025. Additionally, we have initiated the process of obtaining voluntary carbon certification for the compost produced, reinforcing our sustainability goals,” said Peter de Boer, Board Member & Director of Strategy and Investor Relations at DN AGRAR Group.

The solar panel project represents an investment of approximately €1.7 million, with an installed capacity of 2,218 kW. A substantial 60% of this investment will be reimbursed after installation through non-refundable funds from Romania's National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), while the remaining 40% will be covered through bank financing. The installation is planned for the second quarter of 2025, with a subsequent phase involving the addition of battery storage systems to optimize energy efficiency.

Meanwhile, the compost facility at Lacto Agrar farm will have an annual production capacity of 7,000 tons of organic fertilizer. The investment, amounting to €1.7 million, will be funded through bank credit and is expected to be fully operational by the fourth quarter of 2025. With the launch of this second compost facility, DN AGRAR will achieve a total fertilizer production of 14,000 tons per year starting in 2026.

The organic fertilizer produced will be used both internally and sold to external buyers, creating additional revenue streams. Plans also include obtaining organic certification for the products and expanding into specialized markets. Furthermore, the company estimates that approximately 32,000 voluntary carbon certificates will be generated annually, supporting global carbon reduction efforts.
