PPC launches new control room for growing renewable portfolio

Green Forum
PPC Renewables Romania, a subsidiary of the PPC Group, has launched a new control room designed to optimize the production across its expanding portfolio of wind and solar parks, while also managing real-time dispatcher orders from the electricity system operator.

“With the growing installed capacity of PPC Renewables Romania's wind and solar farms, we've opened a new control center with enhanced data capacity, ensuring efficient electricity production management across plants that are often located at significant distances from one another. This facility contributes to the development of Romania's sustainable energy sector, boosting economic competitiveness,” said Adrian Dugulan, General Manager of PPC Renewables Romania.

Angelos Kasimis, Chief RES Operations Officer of PPC Renewables, highlighted the significance of the new facility: “Today marks an important milestone for the PPC Group. The state-of-the-art control room we're unveiling in Romania is crucial for managing Southeast Europe's largest renewable energy portfolio. It reflects our commitment to modern technology and serves as a key driver in our transformation of renewable energy generation, focusing on digitalisation, decarbonisation, and decentralised production.”

The new control room is built to efficiently manage a growing volume of installations and currently oversees 232 wind turbines. Since taking over Enel's operations in Romania, PPC Renewables Romania's installed capacity has doubled to 1.3 GW, solidifying its position as the country's largest renewable energy producer. The company is on track to reach 2 GW by the end of 2026.

The control room's capabilities were thoroughly audited, and the dispatchers have been authorized by the national electricity system operator. This ensures that the company's units can swiftly respond to orders from both regional and central energy dispatchers, in compliance with the Network Code.

PPC Group is rapidly advancing its renewable energy projects, continuously adding new wind and solar initiatives to its portfolio, which now boasts a total installed capacity of around 5.5 GW. Of this, 1.3 GW is located in Romania.

As part of its three-year strategic plan, PPC Group aims to add 6.3 GW of renewable energy capacity in Greece and Southeast Europe by 2027, bringing its total RES capacity to 11.8 GW. Over 60% of the planned additions are already under construction or ready to begin.

PPC's expansion also includes entering new markets such as Italy, Bulgaria, and Croatia, all of which have significant interconnection capacity and renewable energy potential. The group's recent photovoltaic parks in Italy are part of this broader strategy.

PPC Renewables, the key development arm of the PPC Group's renewable energy portfolio, continues to drive innovation in Southeast Europe through large-scale projects across various renewable energy sources, including wind, solar, hydro, geothermal, and biomass.
