ABB opens new energy-efficient factory in Belgium

Green Forum
ABB inaugurated a new factory in Belgium, investing €20 million in its construction, situated in Evergem, near Ghent. This move responds to the escalating demand across Europe for secure, intelligent, and sustainable electrification solutions.

The cutting-edge facility has been meticulously designed to meet the latest energy efficiency standards, incorporating advanced injection molding machinery, digital innovations, and automated systems. This establishment supplants an older facility acquired by ABB in 2018 as part of its integration of GE Industrial Solutions.

The primary focus of the new site is the production of power distribution enclosures, essential for safeguarding electrical distribution components like circuit breakers, fuses, switches, and meters. These enclosures ensure the secure distribution, measurement, and regulation of electricity in residential, commercial, and industrial settings.

Forecasts indicate robust growth in the global electrical enclosure market, expected to surge from $7.42 billion in 2024 to $13.15 billion by 2032. This growth is attributed to the rising demand for new constructions, the upgrading of existing buildings with more efficient electrical systems, and advancements in distribution technologies.

Aligned with ABB's Mission to Zero™ initiative, aimed at substantially curbing greenhouse gas emissions from its facilities, the Evergem site is committed to reducing CO2e emissions by over 6,700 tonnes annually, along with slashing energy consumption by more than 9,400 MWh compared to 2019 levels at the previous location. These efforts are anticipated to yield approximately €2.5 million in annual energy cost savings.

The factory is equipped with energy-efficient machinery and plans to derive 10 percent of its energy needs from 1,330 on-site solar panels, with the remaining power sourced from certified green energy providers. Additionally, the implementation of LED lighting, electric vehicle chargers, heat pumps, cooling water circuits, and a modern air ventilation system further contributes to the site's energy efficiency and reduction in carbon emissions.
