Rețele Electrice România, part of the PPC Group in Romania, has completed a new transformer substation in the resort town of Mamaia to enhance electricity distribution in the area, especially during the high-demand summer tourist season.
The project involved an investment of approximately €8.6 million, entirely funded from the company's own resources, as part of its broader strategy to modernize and expand the electricity distribution network.
The new facility currently supplies power to around 7,800 customers along the northern Black Sea coast, ensuring reliable service tailored to current consumption needs. Strategically located between the Tăbăcărie Substation in Constanța and the Năvodari Substation, the new Mamaia station improves both the efficiency and reliability of the regional grid.
The 110/20 kV Mamaia substation is an indoor facility, housing all electrical equipment within the building. It has an installed capacity of 50 MVA, supported by two 25 MVA transformers. The architectural design of the building reflects the urban character of the area, integrating seamlessly into the local environment.
All connections to the high- and medium-voltage networks were made with underground cables, which enhance both system resilience and environmental sustainability. The substation is equipped with compact, gas-insulated systems, which ensure high operational reliability and optimal use of space.
Power will be delivered via two 110 kV underground lines. Currently, the line from Năvodari to Mamaia is in operation, while the second line, from Mamaia to Tăbăcărie, is planned for a future stage. Medium-voltage distribution is handled through eight lines, with a 15-cell compact busbar, designed to support future capacity expansions based on evolving demand.
