The European Commission (EC) provides €52 million to support nine renewable energy projects across Finland and Estonia. These initiatives include both solar and wind energy developments and are funded under the EU Renewable Energy Financing Mechanism (RENEWFM).
This amount nearly matches the total budget available under the current call (€52.4 million) and aims to strengthen the EU's renewable energy portfolio while fostering cross-border collaboration among member states. Collectively, the projects will add 445.65 MW of new clean energy capacity, with commissioning expected between 2027 and 2028.
In Finland, seven solar photovoltaic projects—Laivakangas, Lamminneva, Isoneva, Lakiasuo, JoSoleilTwo, Lålby, and Pori Peittoo—will benefit from the funding. In Estonia, two onshore wind developments—the Püssi project and the Maima wind park—have also been selected, contributing to the expansion of the country's wind power capacity.
Established by the European Commission in 2020, RENEWFM supports renewable energy development and promotes joint efforts between member states. In this particular funding cycle, Luxembourg provided the financial contributions, while Finland and Estonia will host the projects by making appropriate sites available for development. This arrangement reinforces a shared commitment to meeting the EU's renewable energy goals.
Separately, in April 2025, the EC approved a €400 million Spanish state aid scheme to support renewable hydrogen production through the European Hydrogen Bank's auctions-as-a-service model. Spain plans to install up to 345 MW of electrolysis capacity, targeting an annual output of 221,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen. The initiative is projected to reduce carbon emissions by up to one million tonnes.
