UniCredit Bank and Mastercard have introduced the Mastercard Touch Card™ in Romania—the first tactile-designed payment card in the country, created to support people with visual impairments.
The card features distinct notches for easy identification by touch: rounded for debit, square for credit, and triangular for prepaid cards.
To further support inclusion, UniCredit Bank donated €50,000 to the Caiac SMile Association, which offers visually impaired individuals access to sports like skiing and swimming. For each new Touch Card™ issued, the bank will continue donating €1 until the initial amount is doubled.
Between January and March 2025, over 120 beneficiaries from across Romania joined six adaptive ski camps, including students, teachers, and members of the Romanian Association of the Blind. The camps aimed to build confidence and encourage social integration through sports and education.
The initiative also identified key barriers to sports participation for this community, including lack of accessibility and limited information. The most needed forms of support were adapted equipment and accessible spaces.
UniCredit and Mastercard reaffirm their commitment to inclusive banking and equal access to financial services through innovation and community engagement.
