Holcim Hungary's Királyegyháza cement plant now uses solar energy, covering up to one-third of its electricity needs from renewables, thanks to a 28.45 MWp solar park inaugurated on April 10, 2025.
Built by ID Energy Group, the project marks Hungary's first large-scale solar Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with public grid access, allowing excess electricity to be sold.
The 28.45 MWp solar park, built by ID Energy Group, is unique in its size, marking the first large-scale Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) in Hungary involving a solar energy project with rights to feed electricity into the public grid. This enables the sale of surplus electricity not consumed by the cement plant. The facility supplies clean, renewable energy to the Királyegyháza cement plant, contributing to reducing the company's ecological footprint.
The 15-year agreement was signed in 2022, with construction starting in 2024 and operations beginning in early 2025. The project supports EU energy goals and Holcim's commitment to sustainability. According to Holcim, the investment significantly reduces the plant's carbon footprint and is a key step toward net-zero operations.
